As noted in the Fitness category, staying in good physical condition can help reduce the pain and stem the progress of peripheral neuropathy.
Aerobic exercise is the most important type of exercise in order to control blood glucose levels.
The best types of stationary exercise machines to get your heart pumping are machines like treadmills, elliptical, rowing machines, stair machines.
I have provided some featured products at the end of this page but there are many more to chose from under the Shop>Devices & Equipment menu.
Treadmills: Using a treadmill for walking or running is an excellent way to exercise. You can start off at a low level just walking for the first few times and then building up your speed and resistance level from there. Make sure that the treadmill you purchase has a lot of flexibility in order to absorb the leg motion impact. If the treadmill is too stiff it will end up harming your knees. You will be able to tell whether the device you buy will work within the first few weeks. You should have options for adjusting the incline of the treadmill along with the speed. Most treadmills have pre programmed courses built in like “hill” training where you have to climb a series of hills.
I will be expanding on the features that you should look for in a treadmill over the next few months.
Elliptical Machines: These are my favorite machines because they are very low impact on the knees and still provide a very vigorous workout due to both your arms and your legs being in constant motion. Some elliptical machines come with the heart rate detection system provided on separate handle bars while others provide it right in the moving handles, which is superior to the first type. These machines are much more quiet than treadmills when used on the 2nd floor of your house or on levels above the1st floor in condos and apartment buildings. This is due to the circular bicycle type motion of the feet.
Rowing Machines: Not being able to go out on the water to row rings true for most people on earth. The fact that you can row in the comfort of your own home can make a big difference. Rowing is an excellent aerobic exercise which over time will also build out your trapazoid muscles and will increase the width of your shoulders and upper back.
More information to follow in the next few months.
Stair Stepper Machines: Although a stair machine provides an excellent aerobic workout, it also has a very high impact on the knees. I you already have knees that hurt when you are climbing a set of stairs then you should avoid these machines. They do however really give you the greatest calorie burn in the least amount of time. They should also be used cautiously by starting out a low and easy levels as they really do get the heart pumping very fast within minutes. Putting your heart under too much stress should never be your objective. Rather bring your heart rate into the level that is best for your age and weight and hold it there for at least 20 min during each exercise session.Stationary Bikes: Probably the best non evasive type of exercise. Cycling is easy on the knees yet gets the heart pumping as it should. It is easily adjustable to apply the type of workout you are looking for. Amazingly aerobic. My grandfather was still riding a bike in Europe at the age of 90, so I know this type of activity is good for many people.
