Although peripheral neuropathy has a myriad of causes a majority of people around the world who suffer from peripheral neuropathy have the condition as a result of either having type 2 diabetes or they are pre-diabetic (on the verge of being diabetic). Even if you have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy (PN of unknown causes), it is vital to first consider and focus on your glucose levels. Different people have varied tolerances to glucose under regular body function to the degree that some people suffering from peripheral neuropathy who fall on the low end of being pre-diabetic may have PN symptoms because the cells in their body are less tolerant to glucose than that of someone more tolerant. Whether you are diabetic or not, it may boil down to how tolerant you are to glucose levels which may ultimately result in your peripheral neuropathy.
Lowing your glucose levels requires a balanced approach of controlling your diet, getting regular exercise and consuming key supplements. Cinnamon is one of the key supplements (a spice) that you should consider and here is why.
One of the most significant clinical trials regarding the impact of cassia cinnamon on fasting serum glucose as well as triglyceride, LDL/HDL cholesterol and total cholesterol was completed in 2003. The study by Khan et al., included 60 participants each with type 2 diabetes, of which 30 were men and 30 were women with average ages of 52.2 years +/- 6.32 years took part in the study. The participants were randomly divided into six groups. Those in groups 1, 2 and 3 were dosed with 1,3 and 6 grams of cassia cinnamon daily with groups 4,5 and 6 provided a placebo corresponding to the number of capsules consumed for the three levels of cinnamon.
After 40 days, all three doses of cinnamon reduced the mean fasting serum glucose by 19%-29%, triglyceride by 23%-30%, LDL cholesterol by 7%-27% and total cholesterol 12%-26%. There was, however no significant change in HDL cholesterol. Finally there was no significant change in the results for the placebo groups.

Cinnamon can truly be considered a miracle spice but there may be a downside as with anything taken in access. Cassia cinnamon as opposed to Ceylon cinnamon also contains a chemical called coumarin which may worsen or cause liver disease in people who are sensitive. Although Ceylon cinnamon does not have the potential toxic effect on the liver it has also been proven to NOT have the same glucose reducing effects that Cassia cinnamon has.
In all cases it is advisable to check with your doctor before you embark on a cinnamon regime because the levels to which cinnamon may drop your glucose levels may be excessive if you are already on diabetic medications like metformin. You may actually become hypoglycemic ( a condition in which your glucose is too low) given the cinnamon with your diabetes medication.
Turmeric is another spice known to have properties of lowering glucose levels to some degree but not as dramatically as cassia cinnamon. If you are concerned about the potential toxicity of cassia cinnamon then you should consider alternating between the consumption of cassia cinnamon supplements and turmeric supplements every other day. This may maintain the glucose reducing effects of both spices and significantly lessen the potential effects of the cassia cinnamon on the liver if that is a concern.
